Dramatic Structure

More thoughts from Joel: I'm pretty sure screenplays and memoirs differ in structure, but I'll take a stab at a couple things that may or may not help. The best book I ever read on screenplays was by William Goldman who makes two key points. 1. Nobody knows anything. This was meant to warn people against being too formulaic or predictable. 2. The narrative spine is everything. I think structure might be more imp. for screenplays than for other forms of writing, but they apply to everything.… Continue

The Blessing of a Thoughtful Critique

My friend Joel, a screenwriter, has learned a lot about structure. So I asked him to critique my synopsis and table of contents,. Here's what he said: My biggest, overarching comment is that I feel your POV equivocates too much... on one hand I didn't want to disappoint family... on the other... While this/these conflicts clearly drive the narrative, as a reader I'll be disappointed (I think) if I end up with 6 of one, half a dozen of the other. I thought about this some, and here is what I… Continue

The 12 Steps for Writers

The highlight of the June ’08 SBWC for me was Wednesday night’s award presentation to Sue Grafton. First I liked that it wasn’t just Sue standing up and giving us a talk. The format of having the guest speaker sit with somebody and chat seemed to engage the audience. I hope they use this “in conversation with” format more in the future. Second I liked what Sue said at the end of the program about how a writer isn’t a real writer until they realize not everything they write is good. It’s true. B… Continue

Not a how-to book--just an effort to change the conversation!

After looking at my BTB instructor's comments, Shirley noted her attention to my primary audience as parents, and said, "An interesting angle--parenting for wisdom. Does it appeal to you?" Here is my response. I'm definitely not thinking of it as a how to or self-help book. But when asked by a man from the Landmark Forum in my wildest dreams what I wanted to happen with this book, my unplanned answer flew into my head right away. I said that in my wildest dream I would be able to change the co… Continue

The Tales You Can Tell

Why I write. I write because I can't not write. If I were to stop myself from writing I would then find myself being an unavoidable liar. I tell tales for the simplest of reasons- I can't stop myself. Stories I make up are in my blood and they are the breath of my soul. Personally, I write in order to get deeper toward, more closer to, discover more interest in life's questions about change and metamorphosis, death, birth and regeneration. And I write about those things via my character's strug… Continue
